Literature Text

Mirrors laughed at our broken memory
Smoke-screened behind the velvet curtain.
Slow down
While the shadows dance in a yellow world
Flash in time with the red light green light
It's a waltz of ritual, a tap dance of half lives
We're an audience watching through windows.

White lays with black
A public secret, a broken love affair
Mended with gray ashes and whispers.
Lies hold our universal web together
A porcelain life
A china soul
A vacant mind.

A singular heart beats out of time
Fast-tempo'd, basking in reality
It doesn't matter if black and white
Struggle for the power of surpression;
These fingers have painted the skies at night
Red veined with silver heartstrings
A tattoo on the whitest flesh
Purity defiled in such an austere manner,
Meaningless ghosts discover their purpose

Remeber the days when you were given
Only two choices
You were either one or the other.
The rules have been broken
This fate's been sealed in an hourglass of dreams
I'll never be free in a world of paperdolls
Social butterfly fields of brass
I'd rather live in a cage made of my own hands
Than wither, wrapped in chains,
Living out a lie.
For a friend on his 18th birthday.

He asked me to write something for him as a gift, so I sat down and decided to write about the lesson that I've learned from him which has meant the most:

It's better to live life on your own terms than by the rules of other people because if you don't, you will have regrets.

This is horrible for me, but I haven't written much lately, and hey... at least I tried, right? ;)

For this friend: I love you, you're amazing, happy birthday, man.
